Craig S. Fehlhaber age 71, of Newport, NY, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday February 6, 2025, at his home due to heart failure.
He was born in Bronxville, NY, son of the late William and Virginia Shaw Fehlhaber and was educated in Scarsdale, NY schools. Craig furthered his education at SUNY Oswego graduating with a bachelor’s degree in education. He was currently working toward his Masters degree from SUNY Oswego. On March 20, 2008, he was married to the love of his life Kelly L. DiMeo in Utica. Their loving and blessed union spanned 17 years. Kelly was not only his beloved wife but also his best friend and partner in all things. They were inseparable, working side-by-side in both life and business.
Craig began his educational career with the Norwich BOCES teaching all vocational trades, carpentry, electrical, masonry and plumbing. While teaching the Electrical Trades at the Carpenters Union, Craig was selected by the Utica Superintendent of Schools to become the Clerk of the Works for the Utica City School District. That position evolved into Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds for the UCSD. Upon retiring from UCSD he formed his own Construction Company known as Cook Hill Construction. Simultaneously he served as the Codes and Zoning Officer for the Town of Newport. Even in retirement, Craig’s thirst for knowledge continued. He dedicated himself to countless hours of coursework to become a NYS Certified Codes Officer. Craig was a hardworking man who never stopped, always dedicated to providing for his family and contributing to his community.
He was a member of the Newport Zoning Board, Newport Fire District where he served as Fire Commissioner. NYS Fire Marshals and Inspectors Assoc., Epsilon Pi Tau, Phi Chapter, Kappa Delta Pi, Epsilon Omega Chapter, Phi Delta Kappa, Industrial Arts Assoc., and the American Vocational Assoc.
Craig was a very charismatic individual, who loved life. He greeted everyone with a warm smile and handshake. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Craig will be remembered for his kind and generous heart. He was the sort of person who would do anything for anyone, always putting the needs of others before his own. His compassion and willingness to help touched the lives of many, leaving a lasting impact on his community. In his leisure time, Craig enjoyed the simple pleasures of reading the newspaper, delving into history on the history channel, and relaxing with a bourbon cocktail. Craig was also a devoted animal lover and cherished his beloved pets. Above all, Craig was a devoted and loving father. He was his daughter’s biggest supporter, always there for her, never missing a track meet, cross-country event, dance competition, or dive meet. He championed her dreams and was her constant support, helping her every step of the way. His greatest treasure in life was his wife and daughter, whom he loved dearly. They will forever hold his memory in their hearts.
Surviving are his beloved wife Kelly; his cherished daughter Hallie Constance; his mother-in-law and father-in-law Kathryn and Anthony DiMeo of Utica; brother-in-law Anthony Joseph DiMeo of Rome and extended family and friends.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday February 16, 2025, from 2-3 pm at The Scala, Roefaro & Karboski Funeral Home 1122 Culver Ave. Utica. Funeral service prayers will be at the conclusion of visitation at 3:00 pm in the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the animal shelter of your choice.
The family would like to extend a special Thank You to the Newport Volunteer Fire Dept. EMT’s for their valiant efforts.
Private interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.
