Mr. Erwin Bernard Hughes, age 91, of New Hartford, passed away on Friday December 19, 2014 at the Presbyterian Home.
He was born on July 4, 1923 in Utica, a son of the late Richard and Elsie Bardwell Hughes. Educated locally, he was a graduate of UticaFreeAcademy.
Erwin proudly served our country during WWII in the US Navy in the Pacific Theatre in the Battle of Guadalcanal and Battle of Iwo Jima, and was awarded 9 battle stars.
On November 29, 1947 he was united in marriage to Lucille Mallozzi, a blessed union of 58 years until her passing November 22, 2006.
Erwin was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a Letter Carrier for many years until his retirement in 1984. He was a parishioner of St. Agnes Church.
Surviving are his beloved son, Russell Hughes and fiancAC.e Joanne Roberts of Whitesboro; his cherished granddaughters, Dr. Colleen A. Hughes Driscoll and husband, Shawn Driscoll of Baltimore, MD, and Jennifer A. Hughes NP of Philadelphia, PA and their mother Annette Hughes; his cherished great-grandson Liam Driscoll; in-laws, Alex Mallozzi, Bob Rowe, and Esther and Ramon Cacossa: and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by five sisters, his twin, Evelyn Newman, Dorothy Reams, Reba Despard, Leita Hughes, Luella Eckels and one brother Earl Sherwood Hughes; his in-laws Lena Rowe, Eleanor Sitrin and Virginia Mallozzi.
There will be no public visitation.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial on Monday at 11:00 am in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, with Military Honors. Private interment will be in Mt.OlivetCemetery.
The family will receive visitors at the conclusion of mass in church.
The family wishes to extend a sincere Thank You to the staff and friends at the Sunset Woods Community and also to the staff of the Aspen Unit at the Presbyterian Home for their kindness and compassion given to Erwin and his family.
