Mr. Frank R. Zammiello, Jr. age 88, of Utica passed away on Wednesday June 11, 2014 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center with his beloved family by his side.
He was born on March 23, 1926 in Utica, a son of the late Frank and Mary Polito Zammiello and was educated in local schools. Frank was a devoted and patriotic individual, who proudly served his country during WW II in the US Navy in the South Pacific, aboard the USS Pasadena. His devotion to his country was unparalleled. Upon his return from the service, Frank attended night school at UFA earning his High School Diploma. He also attended MVCC. On July 17, 1948 he was united in marriage to Mary Jane Faga in St. Anthony of PaduaChurch, a devoted and blessed union of 66 years.
Frank's employment spanned the N.Y. Central Railroad, the General Electric Co. and most recent, the N.Y.S. Canal System, until his retirement. During his time at the Canal System and President of the CSEA, Frank was very instrumental in preventing the closure of the canal system, by obtaining millions of dollars in grant money, thus earning him the nickname "Mr. Canal". He was a member of the D.A.V. Stars & Stripes Chapter #82 and was a lifelong parishioner of St. Anthony/St. Agnes Church. Frank was a man of many talents, including artistry, a musician and a jack of all trades.
Surviving are his loving wife Mary Jane, two beloved sons Frank III and wife Tina Zammiello of Old Forge; Theodore Zammiello and fiancAC.e Cynthia Coromato of Clinton; his beloved daughter and son-in-law Maryann and Brian Snow of Utica; his cherished grandchildren Frank Zammiello IV, Anthony and Sarah Zammiello, Julian Zammiello and fiancAC.e Kendal O'Conner, Theodore Zammiello, Sarah Zammiello and John Horvath; his beloved great-grandchildren MacKenzie, Egan and Julian Zammiello; one sister-in-law Rachel Faga, and many devoted nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by 3 brothers Alfonso (Barney), Bernard (Bill) and Pasquale (Chuck) Zammiello.
His funeral will be Saturday at 8:30 am from The Scala & Roefaro Funeral Home, Inc. 1122 Culver Ave. and at 9:30 am in St. Anthony/St. Agnes Church where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated, with Military Honors. Entombment will be in Holy Trinity Cemetery Mausoleum.
Visiting hours will be Friday (today) from 4-8 pm at the funeral home. The D.A.V. will assemble Friday evening at 6:30 pm at the funeral home.
