George “Ron” Hughes, age 90, of Rome, NY, passed away peacefully on Monday March 27, 2023, with the love of his family in his heart.
He was born in Rome, NY on November 29, 1932, a son of the late George and Julia Paff Hughes and was educated in Rome Schools. Ron was a graduate of Syracuse University with a BS degree in Electrical Engineering. He served our country in the US Army from 1953-1955. On February 4, 1961 he was married to Marie Colangelo in St. John the Baptist Church, Rome, NY, a blessed union of 62 years.
Ron was employed with RADC at GAFB, retiring as Supervising Engineer, with over 33 years of dedicated service. He was a loving and gentle man who lived life to the fullest. He was an avid skier, who taught his entire family to ski, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed watching his NY Yankee’s and camping with his family. He especially loved to travel with his wife Marie, both here and abroad. There’s was a bond full of life and love. Ron was also a member of the Lake Delta Yacht Club and the Griffiss Ski Club. Ron’s true passion in life was his family, especially his cherished grandchildren. They will forever hold his memory in their hearts.
Surviving is his beloved wife, Marie; one daughter and son-in-law Julie and Louis DeMichele of Whitesboro; two sons and daughters-in-law Christopher and Elizabeth Hughes of Vermont and David and Kristin Hughes of Pittsford, NY; his cherished grandchildren Anthony DeMichele and fiancé Franca Roefaro and Joseph DeMichele and fiancé Danielle Kavanagh, and Clayton, Kelsey and Shannon Hughes; his sister and brother-in-law Lynne and Joseph Mammone of Lake Delta, his brother and sister-in-law Lance and Ann Hughes of Floyd, NY; his sisters-in-law Phyllis and Michael Schwartz of NC and Linda Barretta of Marcy; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law William and Pamela Colangelo and several nieces, nephews. He was predeceased by one brother Dale Hughes.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial this Saturday 4/1/23 at 10:30 am in St. John the Baptist Church, Rome, NY, with the Rev. Paul Angelicchio officiating. The family will greet all visitors at the conclusion of Mass in church.
