Mrs. Georgette (Lewis) Nehme age 82, of Utica passed away peacefully, after a long and courageous battle, on Saturday February 13, 2016 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center with her beloved family by her side.
She was born in Bekarzala Akkar, Lebanon on March 5, 1933, a daughter of the late George and Nabeha Tohme Lewis. She came to this country as a young girl, arriving in the Port of New York on February 4, 1951 after a 29-day ocean journey. and was educated in local schools. On February 23, 1949 she was married to George Nehme in Lebanon, a blessed union of 43 years until his passing on October 6, 1992. Known throughout the community as a gifted chef and baker, Georgette's Lebanese treats were highly sought after. Beginning with a modest restaurant she and her husband operated in the heart of Italian East Utica, through her many years as the chief pastry chef at Barady's Restaurant, and many private catering engagements, her passion was her food and pastries. Few ever left her home without a "doggie bag" more equivalent to a buffet. For those who knew and loved her, she was happiest when she was feeding you.
She was a long-standing volunteer at St. Louis Gonzaga Church, and a member of the St. Moura Ladies Society and St. Mary's Guild
Surviving are two beloved daughters and sons-in-law Helen and Rocco Carzo of Utica and Donna and Rick Rumery of Ct.; two beloved sons John Nehme, Sr. and George Nehme both of Utica; her beloved and precious grandchildren Rocco and Alexis Carzo and John Jr. and Joseph Nehme; one sister Rose Lewis; one brother and two sisters-in-law Charles and Sharon Lewis and Linda Lewis; her daughter-in-law Joan Mody Nehme and many adoring nieces and nephews, and grand nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister Leona Lewis and two brothers Anthony (Tony) Lewis and Joseph G. (Joe) Lewis.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday from 5-8 pm at The Scala & Roefaro Funeral Home Inc. 1122 Culver Ave. Her Divine Liturgy of the Faithful Departed will be held on Wednesday at 10:00 am in St. Louis Gonzaga Church with The Very Rev. Chorbishop John Faris officiating. Private interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. The Prayer of Incense will be celebrated by The Rev. Joseph Daiif onTuesday evening at 7:30 pm.
