Mr. John R. Caleo, age 66, of Utica, passed away on Saturday July 5, 2014 at St. Luke's Hospital with his loved ones by his side.
He was born in Utica, on November 5, 1947 a son of the late Alfred and Jennie Licari Caleo and was educated in local schools. John proudly served our country in the US Army during the Vietnam War. On November 5, 1983 he was joined in marriage to the former Donna M. Saporito. The couple shared a loving and devoted union for over 30 years. John was formerly employed by the Municipal Housing Authority and retired from the US Postal Service with over 25 years of service.
He was an avid bowler, playing in many area leagues; a member of the American Legion Post # 229, the Clinton VFW and the Purple Heart DAV.
Surviving are his beloved wife Donna, his two daughters Jennifer Caleo and Christine M. Zalocha; one son Rick Zalocha, two cherished grandchildren Hailey M. Foster and Ricky Zalocha III; two sisters and one brother-in-law Becky and Steve LoPiccolo and Donna M. Caleo; his mother-in-law and father-in-law Angela Piperata and Arthur Dischavio; two sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law Renee and Ken Cerjan and Bonnie Saporito and many nieces, nephews, cousins and godchildren. He also leaves his lifelong friends John and Cindy Lazzaro, Joanne Lange; his many friends at Rick's Place and OTB. He was predeceased by his dear friend Rich (Lager) Lange.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Memorial Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday at 10:30 am in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, with the Rev. Joseph Salerno officiating. Military Honors will be conferred
Visiting hours will be Wednesday from 5-8 pm at The Scala & Roefaro Funeral Home, Inc. 1122 Culver Ave. By family request, please omit flowers. The Military order of The Purple Heart will assemble on Wednesday evening at 7:30 pm at the funeral home for services. The family extends a special Thank You to Dr. Wade Hunt, Dr. Anthony Cutry and Dr. M. Sikner for their support and compassion.
