Mr. John (Johnny G) Giovinco, age 93, of Utica, passed away on Friday December 26, 2014 at the Pines Nursing Home.
He was born in Utica on January 1, 1921, a son of the late Giovanni and Pietrina Guercio Giovinco and was educated in local schools. He also attended MohawkValleyCommunity College.
John proudly served our country during WWII in the US Army in Greenland and the United States, and was honorably discharged as a corporal in 1946.
John worked for the UNIVAC Corp. for 17 years, while also serving as Chief Steward of Local 1063. He then worked for Kelsey Hayes Co., retiring in 1983. He was also a part time employee of MohawkValleyCommunity College. John briefly served as an insurance agent.
He was an avid reader and loved to converse on many subjects. He was a parishioner of St. Mary of Mt.CarmelChurch, where he served as an usher for 35 years. He was also a member of the Holy Name Society, the Moose Club, the Fort Schuyler American Legion and the IAM.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews Ignazio (Nate) & Eithne Licata, Margarita Licata, Lucy Brady, Joseph and Sandy Licata, Toni Capocasale, Pietrina and Richard Fetterly and Peter, Joseph and John LaBarbara and dear extended members of the Doris Guido family. He was predeceased by 4 sisters, Lucy Giovinco, Nancy LaBarbara, Frances Licata and Rosalia Capocasale; one brother, Frank Giovinco, his loving companion of 37 years, Doris K. Guido, and his dear niece Patrina Licata.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday at 10:30 am in Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Church, with Military Honors. Private interment will be in St.AgnesCemetery. There will be no public visiting hours.
The family will greet visitors at the conclusion of Mass in church.
A special Thank You is extended to the staff of the Pines Nursing Home for their loving and compassionate care of John.
