Marcy

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of John A. Prumo on Wednesday, December 4th at the age of 80. John was born on August 5, 1944, in Rome, NY to the late John and Michalena (Vaccaro) Prumo. Raised and educated locally, he was a 1962 graduate of T.R. Proctor High School. He furthered his education at MVCC and Utica College. On August 22, 1964, he married Maureen Voce with whom he shared 60 years.

John began his career as a letter carrier and accounting clerk for the U.S. Postal Service in Utica. He then became Treasurer for the Postal Credit Union. The credit union was growing and in 1985, the Postal Credit Union became GPO Federal Credit Union with its first branch on Catherine Street in Utica. John became President and CEO of GPO Federal Credit Union for 34 years, expanding the operation into several branches throughout the Mohawk Valley. John was active on the state level of the credit union movement, serving on many boards and becoming chairman of the New York State Credit Union League. He then took his expertise to the national level to serve on the board of directors for the Credit Union National Association (CUNA). In 2012, he was inducted to the credit union’s Hall of Leaders in Washington, D.C. for his leadership and impact on credit unions large and small. Even in retirement, John continued for many years as a board member for GPO Federal Credit Union and was treasurer for his master condo association in Florida.

As a sports enthusiast, John was a fan of the New York Yankees, Buffalo Bills, and Syracuse University’s basketball and football programs. He enjoyed playing the game of golf and until recently belonged to the Crestwood Golf Club in Marcy, NY. John founded the Utica-Rome Chapter of Credit Unions Charity Golf Tournament in 1988 and the tournament continues to support community organizations.

John is survived by his wife Maureen and his children; Marlene (Mike) Motkowski, Mark Prumo, Nicole (Frank) DeRocco; his grandchildren Michael and Megan Motkowski, Frank, Jr. and Leo DeRocco.; his sister Teresa (Frank) Pugliese, and two brothers, Anthony Prumo and Michael (Theresa) Prumo. He also leaves his sister-in-law, Joan Voce and brother-in-law, Jack Townsend and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

John will be missed by many fun-loving friends both in Utica and Venice, FL.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, December 28th at 10:00 am at Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Church in Utica. The family will greet all visitors at the conclusion of mass.
