Mr. Joseph P. "Onofrio" Ducato, age 93, of Utica, passed away on Sunday June 5, 2016 at the Masonic Care Community with his loving family by his side.
He was born on March 1, 1923 in Utica, a son of the late Benedetto and Rosalie Puleo Ducato, and attended local schools. Joseph proudly served his country in the US Army during WWII, and the Korean Conflict, and also served in the Army National Guard. During his time in Service, Joe achieved the rank of Sergeant First Class and obtained the Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal with one Battle Star, Meritorius Service Unit Citation, New York State Medal of Merit, Marksman Rifle Merit Award and American Defense Merit Medal.
On July 10, 1948, Joe was joined in marriage to Angeline Nivaggi in St. Anthony's Church, a blessed union of 67years until her passing on April 4, 2016
Joe was employed for many years as an Auto and Truck Fleet Mechanic/Supervisor for Abelove's Linen Co. and also the County of Oneida until his retirement in 1986.
He was a member of the V.F.W. Schuyler Post #8728, the North Utica Senior Center, the Floyd Horseshoe Club and the Bocce League at the Sons of Italy. He was also an avid bowler and member of the Pin-O-Rama Senior League and was a dedicated N.Y. Yankee fan.
Surviving are his two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Vincent Miranda of Boonville, and Judith and Steve Lake of Deerfield; one son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Cathy Ducato of N. Utica; his beloved grandchildren, Beth Ann Cable, Jason and Katie Miranda, David and Lisa Miranda, Kimberly and Kevin Maring, Jackie and Patrick Andrews, and Joseph and Angela Bader; cherished great-grandchildren, Lindsey, Dylan, Davin, Dalton, Patrick, Corey, Jared, Joshua, Abigail, Hunter, Lilly and Stevie; one sister, Anna Graziano of Utica. his in-laws Vincent and Claudia Nivaggi, John Nivaggi and Lena Grasso and many cherished nieces and nephews. He also leaves his dear friends from the neighborhood, Marie and Til Cucci, Carmella Mallozzi and Juanita and George Sims. He was predeceased by his sister, Providence and husband Tony Coromato, brother Philip and wife Felma Ducato; in-laws Carmen Grasso, Josephine and Thomas Graziano, Emily Nivaggi and Tom Graziano.
His funeral will be held on Friday at 10:00 a.m. from The Scala & Roefaro Funeral Home, Inc. 1122 Culver Ave, and at 11:00 a.m. in St. Anthony/St. Agnes Church, Utica, with Military Honors Conferred. Private entombment will be in Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum.
Joe's family would like to extend their heart-felt thanks to Daughter for Hire LLC and Masonic Care Community for the compassion, kindness and professionalism shown daily in their delivery of care. Joe's family would also like to extend a special "thank you" to John Popeo for his life-time friendship to Joe and for his support over the past 2 months.
Visiting hours will be held Thursday from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
