Maria Malek

Mrs. Maria (Bacchia) Malek, age 92, of Utica, passed away on Friday, April 7, 2017,at the Masonic Care Community with her beloved family by her side. She was devoted to her family, always making everyone smile. She was an intelligent, hardworking woman with a love for cooking and talking. She survived the war and made a new life for herself in the United States.

She was born on July 2, 1924, in the Province of Pola, Italy, a daughter of the late Giovanni and Lucia Bonetta Bacchia.

On March 27, 1948, she was joined in marriage to the late Wasile Malek in Austria, a blessed union of 58 years, until his passing on January 2, 2007. She immigrated to the United States in 1951 with her husband, Wasile, residing in NYC before settling into Utica in 1953. She was a parishioner of St. Anthony/St. Agnes Church.

A loving and devoted mother and grandmother, Maria is survived by two beloved sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Paulette Malek and Michael and Debra Malek, all of Utica; her cherished grandchildren, Lisa Malek and fiancAC. Brian Dorsagno, James and Nicole Malek, Brittany and Harry Tibets , Samantha Malek, Gabrielle and Mike Soderberg and Alexandra Malek. She is survived by one sister, Amelia Fulgo of Venice Italy; a sister in law Maria Bacchia,, beloved cousin and friend Bianca Rancich, and her nieces Elvira Sumberac and Miranda Bonafacic of New York City. She also had 3 great grandchildren Charlotte and Amelia Tibets and Gianna Malek. She was predeceased by her brother Joseph Bacchia and sister Albina Bacchia.and her beloved cousin and best friend Giovanna Vosilla.

There will be no public visitation.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday at 11:00am in St. Anthony/St. Agnes Church. The family will receive all visitors at the conclusion of mass, in church. Private interment will be in St. Peter and St. Paul Cemetery in Whitesboro NY. The family would like to offer their heartfelt thanks to the staff on Saranac Floor at Masonic Home for the wonderful care they provided.
