Mrs. Mary R. (Altieri) Ferraiola, age 93, of Utica, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, August 16, 2013 with her loving family by her side.
She was born on October 29, 1919 in Asuonia, Italy, a daughter of the late Benjamin and Mary Grace Garafola Altieri. Mary immigrated to NYC in 1921 with her family and was educated in local schools; and earned her degree at the Utica School of Commerce.
On October 28, 1939 she was joined in marriage to Samuel Ferraiola in St. Anthony's Church, a blessed union of 39 years until his passing on February 1, 1979.
Mary was employed by the General Electric Co., and also by Univac for many years until her retirement.
She was a devoted parishioner of St. Anthony and St. Agnes Church.
Mary was cared for by her loving family for the past few years during her illness. She was the proud matriarch of her family and truly loved to cook and bake for them, as well as welcoming everyone into her home. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
Surviving are three sons and one daughter-in-law, Patrick J. Ferraiola of Utica, Richard and Diann Ferraiola of Utica, and James A. Ferraiola and Tom Westcott of FL; one daughter and son-in-law, Joanne and Russ Schmitt of Marcy; her beloved grandchildren, Lisa and Ray Orsino, Richard and Carrrie Ferraiola, Russell and Rebecca Schmitt, Patricia Schmitt and her fiancAC. Bill Stevenson, Tina Oyer Ponce, and Mary and Brian Rahn; 10 cherished great-grandchildren, Jaclyn, Natalie and Rayna Orsino, Gabriel Ponce, Taylor and Maya Rahn, Richard Ferraiola, Daniel Deal and Ethan and Joshua Schmitt; one brother, Nicholas Altieri of New Hampshire; two cousins, Lydia Zegarelli and Louis Barile; her best friend Lena Grasso; her caretaker, Rosanna Flores; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by one sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Sam Gutman; one infant brother Dominick; her great-granddaughter, Grace Mary Ferraiola; and her in-laws, Mary Altieri and Rose and Victor Falzarine.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial on Monday at 12:00 Noon in St. Anthony and St. Agnes Church. Private interment will be in CalvaryCemetery.
Visiting hours will be Sunday (today) from 4-6 pm at The Scala & Roefaro Funeral Home, Inc. 1122 Culver Ave.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Mary's memory to the Alzheimer's Assoc. Envelopes will be available.
