UTICA-Mary Ann (Wolkonowski) Smith, age 90, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 3, 2023, at the Utica Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.
She was born in Yorkville on November 15, 1933, a daughter of the late John and Jadwiga (Mironowicz) Wolkonowski. Mary Ann was employed with the New York City School District for many years, teaching both elementary and middle school until her retirement. While working in NYC she met fellow schoolteacher James Smith, and they married at St. Joseph’s Church, NYC on April 3, 1972, a blessed union of 26 years prior to his passing on January 16, 1998. Mary Ann was a devout Catholic who prayed the rosary daily and was a communicant of Holy Trinity Church. An exquisitely talented artist, she drew many inspirational religious works, and also helped in the foundation of the Confraternity of the Sacred Head of Jesus along with her sister, Theresa, and the late Father Richard Wilczynski.
Mary Ann is survived by her two special nieces, Sharon Marie (Karl) Markwardt and Maria Kozak (and late husband Matt Kozak) as well as niece Jane Salerno, and nephews James and Steve Kozak. She was predeceased by her two sisters, Stephanie Kozak and Theresa Zakrzewski.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral services on Saturday, December 9, 2023, at 10:00 AM at Holy Trinity Church where her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Private interment will be in Holy Trinity Cemetery where she will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband James.
