Mr. Michael F. Fanelli, age 79, of Utica, passed away on Saturday October 5, 2013 at the SiegenthalerCenter, with his beloved family by his side. .
He was born to George M. and Margaret Whalen Fanelli Convertino November 6, 1933.
Mike attended Utica schools graduating from T.R.ProctorHigh School as president of his senior class in 1951. He furthered his education with a Masters Degree in Education from SpringfieldCollege and a Masters Degree in Social Work from SyracuseUniversity. Most of his work was in the field of Human Services which included Oneida County Dept. of Social Services, Oneida County Adult Probation Dept., and NYS Youth Parole. After 18 years he retired as a Mental Health Treatment Team Leader in 1988 from MohawkValleyPsychiatricCenter. Throughout the 60's and 70's he taught gymnastics at the Utica YMCA. He also coached Varsity Track and Gymnastics at Proctor H.S.
A self taught pianist, Mike played at many variety shows and social engagements throughout the area. During his retirement years he enjoyed opera and classical music.
At one time he was married to Helen Pierog Fanelli.
Survivors include his three children, Anne Marie Fanelli, Michael S. and Paul G. Fanelli, all of Clinton; and many nieces, nephews, step siblings, cousins, and a host of close friends. He was predeceased by a brother, George Fanelli, his sister and brother-in-law, Mildred and Joseph Schafer, and his stepfather, John Convertino.
At Mike's request there will be no public visiting hours. Private funeral services will take place at the convenience of the family, with burial in the family plot in St.AgnesCemetery.
The family wishes to thank the medical and support staff of St. Luke's Hospital, Slocum-Dickson Medical Group, the Siegenthaler Center-Hospice Care Inc., for their compassionate care of Michael.
